Expectant mums should up their intake of low GI foods as their belly grows to help ward off gestational diabetes -a disease that rose by 124 percent among Aussie women between 2004 and 2008. Professor of Human Nutrition at the University of Sydney, Jenny Brand-Miller, and dietian Jimmy Louie have embarked on their first clinical trial t prove a link between a low GI diet and gestational diabetes which occurs when heavily pregnant women are unable to use glucose efficiently and need more insulin to counteract rising sugar levels.
